Captain of Patrol

Rusty began his career with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in 1997 as a Telecommunicator. In 1999, Rusty left this position to become a Nationally Registered Paramedic in Granville County. In 2003, he returned to Franklin County as a Deputy Sheriff where he served in the Patrol Division for the next 4 years. During his time as a Deputy, Rusty served as a K9 handler and as a member of the Franklin County Special Response Team (SRT). In 2007, Rusty was promoted to Patrol Sergeant where he served until 2013, when he was promoted to the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). During his time in the Criminal Investigations Division, Rusty worked a variety of investigations ranging from theft to homicides.  In 2020, Rusty was transferred to the Special Operations Group where he worked narcotics cases. 


Rusty holds the North Carolina Sheriff’s Training and Standards Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and has received hundreds of hours of training in the topics of: Advanced Criminal Investigations, Crisis Intervention, Criminal Interdiction, Interview and Interrogation, K9 Training and Less Lethal Use of Force Techniques. Rusty is a certified Criminal Justice General Instructor.
